I was lucky enough to get hired by the Westend BIA to get shots of this year's Davie Day events in Vancouver. These are a few of my favourite shots from that day.
A few shots of a Greek/Roman/Greco-Roman or whatever bust that I found at a friend's place recently. These were shot with my old Sony F707 digital camera. I used the cameras' "solarize" mode which allows manual shooting with the posterized effect.
The Cecil Hotel at the north side of the Granville Bridge is now closed to make way for a new building of condos. I wanted to get some shots of it before it is torn down. These were intended to be more of an impression of the building rather than an architectural record.
I love to wander the alleys of downtown Vancouver looking for interesting images in areas considered to be ugly. There are many back entrances to buildings and businesses that are repainted over and over to cover up graffiti and beautify the entrances. These repaints create amazing vignettes of colour and form. As well there are old signs, markings, messages, razor wire and more.
These are shots of my friend Denys. After taking the original set of images I downloaded them to my computer, brought them up on screen and then re-shot them all. Despite the posterized effect that most people believe is all done in photoshop, I use an old Sonly DSC-F707 camera with a "solarize" setting. I selected that setting then used the camera manually to re-shoot these images. I love re-shooting off my computer screen. Sometimes I will shoot and re-shoot over and over to achieve the "degraded" effect on the images.
Sometimes, it is great to get away from the product shots, the portraits, assorted client work and just play around with form and colour. I find it is a great way to spark creativity and allows me to go off in new directions I hadn't considered before.
I have a 2010 calendar featuring my photography for your computer desktop. Each month I will post the new calendar month for people to download. Thanks to Miles at 24pt-Helvetica for the idea as well as designing the calendar. Visit their site and see more of their great design.
I took a ride on the new Canada Line (Rav) that runs from downtown Vancouver out to the airport and beyond to Richmond. Clean, fast, quiet and inexpensive. Built under budget and on time...early actually. I grabbed some shots as I rode the line and typical to what I like to shoot I messed with the pix afterwards to get something more interesting, at least to me.
